All too often I hear the phrase ‘leaders are born not made’ as if it is some innate and intrinsic skill that only some of us have the ability to perform. Whilst this may be true at times, it also equally true that leadership is a skill that can be learnt. In fact, most leaders I have worked with have been ones that have worked hard to master the skills of leadership.
So, what makes an exceptional leader? The most important element is to have the mindset of the leader and being prepared to be uncomfortable a lot of the time. It is knowing when to step up and when to step back. And, as Jim Rohn said, it is making sure you have the right people on the bus, sitting in the right seats and all going in the same direction.
Being a leader is as much about being authentic as it is about humility. It is about recognising others and championing their talents and achievements. They lead from the front and face adversity without fear. A leader who expects the team to deliver whilst they sit behind their desk with never be respected or become exceptional.
Leaders encourage their team to fail fast and be constantly learning. They lean into growth and stretch their abilities.
It is having strength of character and the ability to articulate their beliefs and goals to their team. They have the commitment to achievement that inspires others. It is also about knowing that they will not get it right all of the time and being prepared to put their hand up to take responsibility, even if not directly responsible.
A leader determines the culture of the organisation and then ensures the team delivers it, not because they have to but because they want to. A great leader takes the team on the journey with them.
